In the early 1930s his parents moved to Hong Kong, where they met and married. Victor's father, Aubrey Chang, was born in Tamworth, while Victor's mother, May Lee, was born in Inverell in north west New South Wales. Victor's grandparents arrived in Australia during the gold rush in the mid 1800s.
